The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes and Nocturnes

Gaiman, N. (1995). The sandman: Preludes & nocturnes (Vol. 1) (2nd ed.). New York: DC Comics. ISBN 978-1-56389-011-6; paperback; $19.99.

Sandman2When a power-hungry magician attempts to capture Death in a ploy to become immortal, he accidentally summons Dream instead. Dream, a.k.a. the Sandman, is imprisoned for 70 years before he finally escapes and avenges himself on his jailer by dooming him to a lifetime of terrible nightmares. But during his years of imprisonment, Dream has lost three magical tokens that give him power: his pouch of sand, his helm, and his ruby. He sets out to reclaim these items and restore his kingdom, the Dreamworld. Unfortunately, along the way he has to contend with all manner of greedy gods and mortals: a sleep junky, a demon who wants to dual, and finally an insane doctor who wants the rest of the world to be as crazy as him. Will Dream be able to overcome all obstacles and restore equilibrium to the world?

This compilation of eight sequential stories is the first installment in Gaiman’s famous Sandman series. If you like fantasy and comics, you’ll love this book. Reading Sandman is also a great way to introduce yourself to Biblical greats, Greek and Roman legends, and classical philosophers, as these characters find their way into Dream’s far-flung adventures. The drawings are colorful and realistic, calling to mind classic superhero comics, but the storyline strays far from the real. Be warned: there is some pretty horrific violence in this book and a bit of nudity. If that doesn’t bother you, I highly recommend that you check out this epic graphic novel.
